Smartly as a game changer

Lyse – one of the largest energy companies in Norway, providing energy services households in the South Rogaland region – recently decided to extend its operation in the area of smart home, which includes energy management, home security and home welfare. To achieve this, the company created a new company, Lyse Smart, which operates under the brand ‘Smartly’.

Like other energy companies in Norway, Lyse is mandated by the Norwegian Government to deploy smart meters to every home in its footprint by the 1st January 2019. For every smart meter Lyse deploys, it also installs alongside a smart gateway. Beyond this initial deployment, Lyse’s smart home solution has been designed to build in scale and could be deployed throughout the rest of Norway and internationally.

A key component of the application stack for the deployment of the Smartly service is AXPERIENCE, which enables automatic provisioning, end to end control of the lifecycle, self care features and dynamic application provisioning for Smartly end users.

“Lyse believes future homes should be run by local companies who will provide customers with safe and secure electricity, energy, water and gas – rather than a global technology or commodity company whose main goal is to own customers’ personal data,” commented Lyse CEO Jan Holm. “We have developed and built an infrastructure that keeps data secure and in the community – where it belongs.”

“Home automation is less about gadgets and convenience – it is about meeting an increasing demand for services, care - even life support,” added Holm. “For example, resources to care for our aging population are waning – so what do we do? What if we could provide a safer home environment for a longer period of time, saving on institutional and medical costs – and more importantly – improving quality of life? This can be done with Smart Home technology. Lyse is working now to make this happen in the Nordic region.”

Lyse has a vision for the future of the Smart Home beyond just “home automation.”

The Smart Grid and energy/efficiency solutions are a central point in home automation. Devices (e.g. electric cars, induction stoves and tankless water heaters) which have high peak power consumption can be combined with more the decentralized electricity generation systems that are emerging (e.g. customers as producers) and will create a demand for a new set of services towards customers for automation of energy consumption.

Network Independence: Using TR-069 as the transport protocol for the management traffic, the Smartly gateway can be deployed in any network – with or without cooperation from the service provider – and it will still operate on a highly secure channel providing full visibility on all devices connected to it.

Service configuration abstraction: which guarantees the ability to focus on the service implementation and detach from the details as well as the limitations of the underlying hardware platform. A key features that preserves the ability to design long lasting services while – at the same time – retain the freedom to choose the best fitting hardware vendor at any given time in the service lifecycle.

Designed for Cloud scalability: which conjugates the need for a quick time to market with the uncertainty of a fast developing market. Even though the complete set of assumptions are not known at service initial deployment, the infrastructure can be roll-out with maximum confidence since the operation to re-scale it is completely seamless and can be executed on the platform with no service interruption.

API Layer: with all access control, accounting, distribution, exception handling, security and authorization features of a full fledged API Management infrastructure, the AXPERIENCE API Layer offers in addition the ability to dynamically reconfigure the API signatures to map to an existing BSS/OSS infrastructure. And all without the need of coding.
