Depending on the size of the company and the level of IT executive position in question (it's not the same to hire an IT Manager, IT Director or CTO)

If I am hiring an IT executive I will not let HR shortlist candidates and miss some good ones due to resume length or keyword search. Usually, I will already have a few picks that I will reach out to and discuss the opportunity with, as most of the executive positions get filled without a job ad being posted. The company (the hiring manager) wants to get someone on board and will reach out directly or via a recruiter, but in that case, the resume is not what influences the decision of hiring someone, they've already checked your LinkedIn profile or knows you (and your work) from somewhere ... it matters more how you do on the interview so the resume can be just a formality.

Why does there have to be a limit?

I think , That’s primarily because HR in their short listing can’t process beyond that and those using automated tools for screening also may not scan all through.

Thanks, <mention id="6030a9a4760f9e000157b383" displayname="Prince Joseph"></mention> for your perspective. From my perspective, if we're relying on HR shortlisting to not process or automated tools to screen, we're probably not going to have success at those types of companies regardless of resume length.

If you have decades of experience , you have to pick and choose but leaving things out may be omission that may be costly , so I think 2 page for quick focus and a third for the supporting bits.
