What advice would you give to a newly minted Quality leader struggling to define key performance metrics?

KPI's should be items that add the most value to the organization. What saves cost, improves service, identifies quality issues. You have to be careful to not provide too many KPI's as you can get paralysis by analysis so typically you want to focus on perhaps 3 to 5 key KPI's. You should also provide weightings to these to ensure the team understands which ones are the most important. You have to be cognizant of creating too many KPI's which can create confusion or people trying to manage too many KPI's. The key is to get really good and laser focused on the ones with the most impact and highest ROI.
Use SMART criteria and collaborate with critical stakeholders such as procurement, sourcing, product development, and engineering. Always emphasize continuous improvement, review the top 2-3 KPIs, and focus on products with near-failure rates. Simultaneously, deploy a CFT and address legacy products or issues under your leadership. Connect with supplier heads and leadership, informing them about your work style.
