Access to a wide range of learning options (conferences, self learning, in-person courses) and encouragement to engage in Professional development is a key element employee development and retention.

Ongoing training and learning are crucial for every engineer, whether your company provides you with access to resources or not. That learning or growth mindset is what you sign up for in this industry — the tools you’re using today might be irrelevant in two or three years. That said, I think it is helpful for companies to provide some resources and support so their engineers can keep learning.

As a leader, providing subscriptions to learning services and sending your engineers to conferences is helpful. We’ve used Pluralsight, which I highly recommend, and we’re just getting started with AWS Skill Builder. There are also a lot of free options out there if your budget is tight. YouTube videos are great, and you can schedule a watch party to watch and discuss the video together as a team. Lunch-and-learns are another good option.
