As others have stated you need to be able to connect with your audience and make the learning accessible to them.

The key is finding the key to trigger said person's interest. I had a chance to be taught by such a person in high school. This teacher would find 10-15 ways and examples to get his point across. He would switch his teaching method from fun to dead-serious in the drop of a pin, and, the crazy thing was, we all accepted it and complied. He was someone who knew how to read the room and give his audience, us his students, what we needed, when we needed it and almost everyone would understand the conveyed message, in his own way.
What I'm trying to say is, that there's always an opening in everyone's defenses. It may take you a while to find it but once you do, if you play your cards right, you will be able to reach this individual and they will be more than happy to work with you.

You have to make it part of their job description.
