Recently, I was recommended for a CTO position in a manufacturing company by a cybersecurity provider. I’d spoke and was interviewed by the HR Manager and the CEO of the manufacturing company. They told me that besides psychometric tests I would have to develop a business case for this hiring process. Yesterday I’d received that business case, and rather being an hypothetical one, it was a specific one with all their pain points, which I would have to delve into strategies, planning, actions and metrics. By reading this, I identify that they want a “free consulting” rather than hiring a CTO, would you think the same as I do? One thing that I’d felt weird was that during the interview, they’d never asked me about how much $ I was aiming for. What are your thoughts about it?

For a good company the interview should be a two way conversation. The fact that they didn't ask about money isn't a huge red flag, as they may be willing to pay for quality, but asking for a specific detail business case for the hiring process your going through highlighting their pain points should give pause. You may want to contact the HR Manager and or CEO and see if they can outline the hiring process and how this information will be used.

This definitely sounds suspicious. If it’s your dream opportunity I might do the work and interview but something sounds wrong. A Harvard MBA business case analysis doesn’t worry me but if it’s too specific to the company and the company is small, they might be after free consulting as you mentioned
