Apart from the obvious compensation and benefits items, the two areas I have seen to have the biggest positive impact is how they contribute to company’s success and what their potential career path is.

Impact: staff feel more engaged when they feel they are actually contributing to the success of the company. Helps with the quality of execution and the urgency in delivery.

Career: have a career path for both technical and non-technical staff. The technical career path is essential to keep the high performers who do not want management responsibilities but want to feel they have a growth path.
