How to Build a Reliable Cloud

When to select private over public cloud

Xu Guangbin

Welcome

Due to the development of technology itself and support of national policy, cloud computing is landing to China rapidly. For enterprises, the transformation to cloud is the best opportunity to promote the enterprise development and to realize enterprise change. Either the cloud or the big data will allow the enterprise to obtain new business model and find out the new development direction. During the deployment of cloud computing, if the division of public cloud and private cloud can be seized clearly and rational choice can be made, it will be much easier for enterprise to transform to cloud.

This webletter from HUAYUN and featuring research from Gartner focuses on the presentation of private cloud application, especially some recommendations for usage scenario of private cloud so that the users can have rules to follow in their deployment of private cloud. At the end of this webletter, we will share the successful case of deploying rail transit private cloud with you, and hope to bring enlightenment to more people.

  • Refreshed: 24 June 2016 | Published: 17 September 2015

Many enterprises are taking a cloud-first strategy, opting for the speed and agility of cloud computing for infrastructure, platforms and application services. This research will help I&O leaders, cloud architects and brokers determine when to choose a private over public cloud computing model.

This research is reviewed periodically for accuracy. Last reviewed on 24 June 2016.

Key Challenges

  • IT organizations lack a decision-making framework for building, deploying and operating workloads on public and private cloud services.
  • IT organizations do not know the costs of service delivery on the private cloud, and therefore cannot optimize their implementation or compare alternatives for placement.
  • Surveys of infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders point to an overwhelming desire for hybrid cloud computing, yet many are uncertain of how best to implement a hybrid environment.

Recommendations

  • Choose private cloud where you have stringent SLA delivery or for application performance requirements.
  • Choose private cloud where you require greater transparency and auditability than the public cloud offers for compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Choose private cloud where there is a cost advantage, or where you have recently invested in data centers or infrastructure and you desire a return on your investment.
  • Choose private cloud for Mode 1 applications with the need for more frequent releases.

Enterprises are increasingly turning to public cloud computing to enable faster, frictionless services, which increase business agility and spur innovation. Public cloud computing fills a key role for innovation, and as a result, is forecast to grow at 15.2% through 2019.1 Private cloud computing has the attributes of public cloud computing (see Note 1), except that the services are not shared with other enterprises; they are for the use of a single enterprise's business units (or shared only with its partners).

Private Cloud in the Rail Transit Industry – A Success Story

WUXI METRO Group Co., Ltd. is mainly engaged in the comprehensive development of city rail transit system and its surrounding resources. The scope of business of the group also covers investment, financing, construction, operation and management projects affiliate to the rail transit projects. The group takes on the jobs of other city infrastructure construction and operation management that issued by the government as well. In July 1st, 2014, the first line of WUXI METRO, Line 1, opened, and the average daily passengers were no more than 90 thousand in the first month. However, from February 2015, the daily passengers of Line 1 and Line 2 maintained at 190 thousand. In Feb. 28th, 2016, the amount of daily passengers even reached 306.6 thousand which had been the largest daily traffic for Line 1 and Line 2.

As the informatization of WUXI METRO developed further, all applications and servers, storage and network resources are increasing and the sale of the network and the number of terminals are growing too. Compared the Legacy information infrastructure with the cloud computing technology architecture, the weakness of the former is obviously day by day. High construction cost brings no expected corresponding output but low resource utilization. The large system with the demand of constant expansion still along with a narrow interval increasingly, which requires the complex and changeable configuration increasingly, is a big challenge to the post-maintenance. The details are as below:

  • Business system expands frequently, leading to a long launch period, impedes the development of business
  • Data storage is decentralized, lacking of security and reliability protection
  • The Utilization of physical IT resources is uneven, hardware duplication results in the resource waste with the high cost
  • Too many brands of software and hardware leading to the difficulty of operation and maintenance
  • IT resource application process is ambiguous, lacking of effective mechanism for resource recovery

Confronted to the problem mentioned above, WUXI METRO plans to build a private cloud platform to integrate all internal IT systems through virtual technology and cloud computing platform. The group expects to achieved the goals of unified management to improve the reliability and availability of resources, cost down to hardware and management significantly, improve the resources utilization so that a dynamic, flexible, elastic, virtual, shared and efficient resources service can be offered to the application to speed up the production and the development which will solve the current problems.
