Tech Leadership Poll: Self-Starters vs. Direction-Followers As a tech leader in a resource-constrained environment (startup or small company), which type of team member do you find more valuable? 1. The Self-Starter Takes initiative to identify and solve problems without being asked May sometimes work on issues outside their immediate responsibilities Approaches obstacles with a "get it done" mindset Will fix broken systems (like flaky tests) rather than working around them 2. The Direction-Follower Efficiently executes on clearly defined tasks Stays focused on their assigned priorities May escalate problems rather than tackle them without approval Prefers process-based solutions to recurring issues 3. Additional Context (Optional): What percentage of your ideal team would be self-starters vs. direction-followers? How does your preference change based on seniority level? In what situations have you found each approach more valuable?

I'm very interested in this breakdown, and will be examining trends between answers and the companies that responded.  I'd love to know if larger companies like "direction-followers" while smaller might prefer "self-starter".
