It’s been debated in limited circles. Very few job roles are interested in this incident. Mainly the discussion is about what constitutes critical and unusual circumstances. I think we all agree that a big swath of what we want assistance with does not fall in that category. If we need help we'll get it. But there is some debate around what is crucial.

We have talked about this in a few different forums at my organization, and some say “Great, we'll take the help.” Others say it's an invasion of privacy. Overall, though, we didn't see it as the government stealing from the targeted companies. We thought of it like a neighborhood fire with the potential to spread: The government comes in, puts out the fire, and moves on. But I know this case is different.

As the referenced article suggests: "Even if the intent was good – in short, helping to protect the businesses by removing the access of cyber attackers, and authorised by the courts – this is a significant step by law enforcement."

If there's a debate, it is focused on better understanding of the new realities and on how we continue to engage with various Government/Industry initiatives to drive positive outcomes. 

These are very complicated, multi-faceted issues that will take a long while to address properly. Until then, it will probably remain on a case by case basis.
