How have companies you know of kept their teams engaged and their culture strong while going through tough pivots or stretches of unprofitability? Are there any examples of what's worked well that this team can share?

Here is my experience while working in a regional bank. The business targets were extremely aggressive and we were falling behind. To keep the teams motivated, here were some actions taken :
1. Communicate, communicate, communicate - the more transparent you are, the easier it will be for maintaining trust especially during tough times. Sharing both bad and good news is important. Helping people see the end of the tunnel is important. Highlight what will help us stay competitive even during tough times and how individuals should focus on. Quite often these are related to your core values and culture.
2. Provide opportunities for learning and development. While it may sound contradictory, in fact challenging times often provide opprotunities for people to think out of the box to fix problems or to create new solutions.
3. Reward those who strive and excel. They are role models and the performance will serve as examples for others to follow.
4. Visible leadership - leaders walking the talk is important.
Hope this helps.
Bring people together in small groups on a regular basis to build connection and tie them to the larger mission. Worked well for us.
