I see AI fundamentally changing the procurement function. In the next 5 to 10 years, we could see AI-first procurement departments, especially in small to medium-sized businesses. These businesses may not have the resources to hire extensive procurement teams, but AI can handle many repetitive and manual tasks. Experienced professionals will then guide these AI systems, maintaining and progressing them, rather than performing the tasks themselves.

I agree with your vision of AI-first procurement departments in the long term. In the interim, AI can help manage our emotions and provide coaching. My dream is for AI to take over some of the confirmation and coaching roles I currently perform, allowing my knowledge and approach to be consumed by others without taking up my time. This would free us from mundane tasks and enable us to focus on more strategic activities.

Embracing disruption will become a competitive advantage, especially in supply chains. AI can help make supply chains more agile by running simulations of potential problems. This technology can act as a co-pilot in day-to-day operations. Additionally, AI will play a significant role in learning and development, offering personalized coaching and learning experiences.

Right now, the potential of generative AI is a bit gray. Many organizations are promoting some form of artificial intelligence to manage repeatable tasks. However, when it comes to generative AI, the focus is on forecasting economic conditions and making better decisions in areas like mergers and acquisitions or manufacturing partnerships. While these applications are promising, I believe we're still 5 to 10 years away from fully realizing this potential. Many companies claim AI capabilities, but often it's more aspirational than practical at this stage.
