Welcome
Engineering has been working on a three blocks roadmap for its own IT solutions focused on enabling an industry-specific digital vision.
The first key challenge inside the roadmap is still placed within the E&U traditional business model: It establishes to seize operational efficiencies both through a work force, field force digital transformation and an increasing customer engagement in M2C process particularly using self-caring solutions. At the same time, the development of a new near or extra commodity offering enlarges operators existing revenues.
In the second block disruption just starts to take place: commodity and assets ownership is expected not to be any more the unique means of generating economic value for market operators. The key success factor is represented by moving to a platform based business model, where third parties define their own commercial proposition and Utilities additional revenues are generated by third parties’ platform usage. Analytics, sharing economy and on-line marketplace are required IT capabilities. [...]
Then in the ultimate block, the platform is part of a wider ecosystem where APIs connect different kind of objects and machines are able to generate value by themselves, leveraging data, algorithms and information exchange. In this scenario, value generation definitely moves to Machine learning, predictive analysis and Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring capabilities.
In this approach, these three blocks are not part of a stepwise digital transformation process, but they have to be taken in serious consideration just from the beginning, so that utilities can capture all the potential of digital business transformation.
The use of IT cloud solutions gain more and more importance; they are likely to be dominant at the end of this route, even if legacy solutions are not expected to be completely substituted, specifically related to core business processes.

- Magic Quadrant for Meter Data Management Products
- Zarko Sumic, Keith Harrison
- 17 December 2018
Market Definition/Description
The market considered for this Magic Quadrant consists of utilities seeking products for managing metered consumption data. Metered data managed in these products can be used across the enterprise and shared with customers, partners, market operators and regulators. For the purpose of this Magic Quadrant assessment, meter data management (MDM) products are IT components of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). These products are responsible for cleansing, calculating, providing data persistency, and disseminating consumption and event data obtained from meters installed on delivery points.
MDM products can contain a subset of meter asset information, or even some premise, topology or customer information. However, the key data being tracked is metered commodity consumption and meter-related events, regardless of the type of commodity metered, type of meter, communication technology or collection device (aka headend).
