Find key similarities between yourself and the predecessor and capitalize on those. Listening is part of this process. Understand what made them successful and identify qualities you share. This helps build on their success while gradually introducing your own brand.

That's what happened to me. My predecessor retired, and we had a three-month handover period. Respect what they achieved and what the team accomplished with them. Despite differences, be respectful of the great things they achieved.
Respect the legacy.
