What platforms are people using to deliver training and learning to their teams? In our heads right now, we see 3 main options 1) use an LMS where you create content yourselves 2) bring in content from providers 3) send out to other platforms and let teams self-serve. What are your main approaches?

We are using a range of platforms. We have an LMS and are in the midst of recalibrating our marketing curriculum, we also use LinkedIn licences for some of our marketeers.

Having an internal LMS is a must in my opinion. You need a repository of your internal knowledge (even if it's just a Google drive of documentation rather than a proper LMS. This makes sense for smaller organizations).

In addition to an LMS, incorporating external knowledge is crucial. While I previously favored a fully self-serve approach where employees choose their own learning path from external providers (such as Udemy or LinkedIn Learning subscriptions or relevant conferences in their area of expertise), I now believe that a more productive learning approach involves managers working with the people on their teams to define their personal learning and training paths. This approach helps employees make informed choices about what to learn from external sources, which would most benefit their professional development. In other words, a manager-guided self-serve approach is the best approach, in addition to internal training sessions.

I changed my mind from believing in fully self-serve team learning to manager-guided self-serve after seeing that most employees feel lost in the sea of learning choices and end-up not taking advantage of external learning opportunities that could have benefited both them and the company.
