In our organization we are called the People Strategy + Culture Team.  I continue to see various versions using the word "People". Our business partners are called People Partners. We also have People Services, People Operations etc.

We recently merged two departments together (Office of DE&I and HR) so we are now called the Division of People, Culture and Belonging. The university stakeholders are adjusting to the name change as are we. I also recently changed the title of recruiters to talent advisors as we move more to a strategic partner versus proactive talent approach.

I think the name changes as it reflects the dominent ethos of the time .

When I first started as a Graduate the term   "Personnel" was used which reflected its administrative roots . Over time with the move to Ulrich model  and the more mechanical  approaches to "resources" there was a shift to HR .

I think we have a new shift gradually happening now :  with AI and tech offering a more individual centric offering , with focuss on the  person (more human ironically), more socially aware,   this is coming out  in new function names like People (@facebook) ,  Employee Experience , People and Culture .

I dont  know what the new common  function name will evolve to  but I  think it should reflect what you are  for as a function

First ask yourself, why do you sense you might need to change the name of the HR Department. If you feel you don't get the right budget, strategic prioritization, exposure or support, the name change does not matter. Happy to talk about this off line if it helps.

There is no perfect name depends on size, sector etc etc.

Human Capital is the Function name that most firms are moving towards.
