Board of Directors



Mr. Bingle joined Silver Lake in 2000 and is a Managing Director. He has significant experience in private equity investing, financial engineering, and large-scale mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining Silver Lake, Mr. Bingle was a principal at Apollo Advisors, L.P. ("Apollo"), where he evaluated, structured, executed, and harvested a wide variety of private equity investments. Prior to Apollo, he worked as an investment banker in the Leveraged Finance Group of Goldman, Sachs & Co. Mr. Bingle holds a B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University. While at Duke, he completed a two-year fellowship for the National Science Foundation, the purpose of which was to develop new ultrasound technology for medical imaging.

Fuchs has served as a Director of Gartner since June 1999. Fuchs joined Phillips in May 2001 where she oversees and manages Phillips' global business and financial operations. Prior to joining Phillips, she was Senior Vice President and Group Publishing Director at Hearst Magazines with primary responsibility for the organization's Women's Group of Magazines. Prior to joining Hearst in 1994, Fuchs was a Senior Executive at Condé Nast Publications Ltd., where she served as Senior Vice President and Director, International from March 1994 to September 1994 and as Publisher of Vogue Magazine from January 1991 to March 1994. Prior to joining Condé Nast, Fuchs held Executive and Publisher positions with a number of companies including The New York Times Company and Hachette Publications (including predecessors Diamondis Communications, Inc. and CBS Magazines).

Fuchs is presently serving on the Board of Trustees of the Whitney Museum and The Arts and Science Board of Overseers of New York University, is involved with numerous other civic and charitable organizations. Fuchs holds a Bachelor's Degree from New York University and two Honorary Doctorate Degrees.

Grabe has served as a Director of Gartner since April 1993. He has been with General Atlantic Partners, an Investment Firm, since March 1992 and he has been a General Partner of General Atlantic Partners since January 1994. Prior to that, he was a Special Partner of General Atlantic Partners beginning in April 1993. From February 1984 until March 1992, Grabe was a Corporate Officer at IBM Corporation.

Grabe is presently serving on the Board of Directors of Compuware Corporation, a Computer Systems Software Corporation; LHS Group, Inc.; TDS GmbH; MARCAM Corporation, an Enterprise Resource Planning Software Provider for Process Manufacturing Companies; and BAAN Company N.V., an Enterprise Resource Planning System Provider for Open Systems and Client-Server Environments. Grabe is also on the Board of Directors of several privately held companies in the Computer Software and Services Industry. Grabe holds a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from New York University and a Master of Business Administration Degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Gene Hall was named CEO of Gartner, Inc., the world's largest and most influential technology research company on August 3, 2004.

Gene joined Gartner from ADP, a Fortune 500 global technology and services company with over $7 billion in revenues, where he was a senior executive from 1998 to 2004. Gene was President, Employers Services Major Accounts Division, a $2 billion Human Resources and Payroll services business with 8000 associates. Under Gene's leadership, this business accelerated sales to new clients, achieved record client retention and delivered unprecedented quality scores. Concurrently, Gene led a 1600 person software development and IT operations organization that introduced several new, high-growth products. Prior to this role, Gene was responsible for technology, strategy and new businesses across the company.

Before joining ADP, Gene was a Director (senior partner) with McKinsey & Company, a leading global management consulting firm. In his 16 years at McKinsey, Gene focused on developing business strategies for leading technology-based companies and other organizations where technology plays a central role in their business.

Gene brings a vital mix of strengths to Gartner. He knows and loves technology. He has experience in leading and accelerating the growth of a large, complex, technology-based business. And he has substantial experience advising companies on how to effectively link and leverage technology with business strategy.

Gene graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1978 and received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1982 with distinction. Gene and his wife, Beth, have three children.

Hopper has served as a Director of Gartner since January 1994. In 1995, he founded Max D. Hopper Associates, Inc., a Consulting Firm specializing in creating benefits from the strategic use of Advanced Information Systems. Hopper is the retired Chairman of the SABRE Technology Group and served as Senior Vice President for American Airlines, both units of AMR Corporation.

Hopper is presently serving on the Board of Directors of Metrocall, Inc., Payless Cashways Inc., USDATA Corporation, Inc., Exodus Communications, Inc., United Stationers Inc., and Accrue Software, Inc. Hopper holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Houston.

Hutchins has been a Director of Gartner since April 2000. A founder of Silver Lake Partners, Hutchins has been in the private equity business since 1985 when he joined the Thomas H. Lee Co. (THL Co.). For parts of 1993 and 1994, Hutchins took a leave of absence from THL Co. to serve as Special Advisor in the White House. Hutchins also served as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Clinton-Gore transition during the latter part of 1992. Upon leaving the White House, Hutchins joined The Blackstone Group as a general partner focused on investing the Blackstone Capital Partners Merchant Banking II and III funds.

Hutchins is a director of Seagate Technology, Inc., Datek Online Holdings and Island ECN. Hutchins is Vice Chairman of the Board and Director of CARE, Inc. and a trustee of Lawrenceville School. Hutchins graduated from Harvard College, Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School.

Pagliuca has been a Director of Gartner since July 1990. He founded Information Partners for Bain Capital in 1989. As a Managing Director of Bain Capital, he has been involved in over thirty acquisitions of significant information and medical companies including Gartner, Dade International, Physio-Control, Wesley-Jessen and Vivra. Previously, Pagliuca was a partner at Bain & Company where he managed significant relationships in the healthcare and information services industries. Pagliuca was instrumental in acquisition, divestiture and strategy development programs for these clients. He was also involved in developing Bain's turnaround practice in which he worked with investment groups and corporate clients to rapidly improve underperforming business units. Pagliuca also worked as a Senior Accountant and Iinternational Tax Specialist for Peat Marwick Mitchell & Company in the Netherlands.

Pagliuca is presently serving on the Board of Directors of Dynamic Details, DexterUs, the Corporate Executive Board, Dade International and Wesley-Jessen. Pagliuca is a Certified Public accountant, and holds a Bachelor's Degree from Duke University and a Master of Business Administration Degree from the Harvard Business School.

Smith has been a Director at Gartner since October 2002. Prior to becoming Chairman of the Board of First Health, he led the company through nearly 20 years of record growth and financial performance as President and CEO. Smith, who joined First Health in 1984, built the company into the nation's premier full-service national health benefits company, with revenues of nearly $600 million in 2001. Under Smith's leadership, First Health has been very successful in developing and maintaining long-term relationships with large national clients, maintaining a client retention rate of 96% over the last decade.

Jeffrey W. Ubben, is a founder of ValueAct Capital. Prior to founding VAC, Ubben was a Managing Partner at BLUM Capital Partners for more than five years. During his tenure at BLUM, the actively managed assets under management grew more than five-fold, from $336 million to approximately $1.8 billion. Previously, Ubben spent eight years at Fidelity Management and Research where he managed two multi-billion-dollar mutual funds, including the Fidelity Value Fund, and served as a research analyst for a variety of industry sectors. Ubben is a director of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc., Gartner, Inc., Mentor Corporation, and Per-Se Technologies, Inc., and a former director of Insurance Auto Auctions, Inc., Playtex Products, Kinetic Concepts, Inc. and Smarte Carte. He has a B.A. from Duke University and an M.B.A. from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Webb has been a Director at Gartner since September 2001. As Chief Operating Officer, eBay, Maynard runs eBay's daily operations. As President of eBay Technologies, Maynard is responsible for eBay's overall technology strategies, engineering, architecture and site operations. He has a distinguished record of IT and business management achievements compiled over a 20-year career at Gateway, Bay Networks, Quantum, Thomas-Conrad, Figgie International and IBM. Most recently, Webb was senior vice president and CIO at Gateway, a Fortune 250 leader in computing technology, where he contributed to the company's rapid expansion and Internet-enabled business operations. Prior to Gateway, Webb was vice president and CIO of Bay Networks, where he oversaw the company's IS organization and led the company's award-winning architectural systems strategy.

Maynard has a B.A. degree from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida and graduated magna cum laude.

Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer

Chris Lafond was appointed Chief Financial Officer in October 2003. Lafond is responsible for worldwide finance, tax, treasury, investor relations, and corporate real estate, as well as having direct client responsibilities.

Since joining Gartner in 1995, Lafond has held numerous positions in the finance organization including senior vice president for worldwide finance operations and CFO for Gartner North America & Latin America, group vice president & controller, vice president & assistant controller, vice president of finance and director of finance. Prior to joining Gartner, Lafond held finance positions at IBM and J.P. Morgan Investment Management.

Lafond graduated from the University of Connecticut and received an M.B.A. in finance and accounting from Columbia Business School.

Senior Vice President, Worldwide Events

Alister Christopher is Senior Vice President, Worldwide Events. Under Christopher's leadership, the Events organization has been driven to new heights delivering exceptional growth, solid performance and client satisfaction. Christopher is a Gartner veteran with an impressive record of success in his 12 years at Gartner. He began his career as a Sales Executive and rose through the ranks in roles ranging from Director, Sales Operations in EMEA, VP of EMEA Inside Sales, GVP, North American Inside Sales and GVP EMEA Sales.

Prior to Gartner, Christopher spent 10 years in the IT industry, with, among others, ICL Corporation.

Christopher studied Business Management at Swansea College, United Kingdom.

Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer

Eric joined Gartner in June 2005 from CIGNA Corporation, where he served as Senior Vice President & CIO of the Healthcare Division, with an IT staff of over 1,000 and $10.8 billion in premiums. During his tenure at CIGNA, he also served as Senior Vice President of eCommerce where he successfully implemented myCIGNA.com. Later, Eric was named divisional CIO of the healthcare business, where he was vital to the rescue of CIGNA's troubled, multimillion dollar "Transformation" initiative. He and his team successfully stabilized systems, implemented new processes and procedures, and mobilized the group to deliver capabilities that enabled CIGNA to bring to market significant new products. Eric's experience also includes stints at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Unisys and Anderson Consulting/Accenture. He holds an MBA in Finance and International Business from New York University's Stern School of Business.

Senior Vice President, Research Operations and Business Development

Robin Kranich is a senior vice president at Gartner, where she is the global head of Research Operations and Business Development. Ms. Kranich is responsible for product planning and innovation in Research. Her additional responsibilities include Corporate Marketing and Product Management.

Prior to this role, Ms. Kranich was senior vice president and general manager of Gartner EXP. Under Ms. Kranich's leadership, EXP sustained an aggressive growth rate of 25% year over year while building a scalable infrastructure to support one of Gartner's fastest growing and most strategic businesses.

Previously, Ms. Kranich served as vice president and chief of staff to Gartner's president. Also during her 10-year tenure at Gartner, Ms. Kranich was responsible for and directed the successful launch of an inside sales channel located in Ft. Myers, FL.

Ms. Kranich originally joined Gartner as an account executive in September 1994, and was a top performer for three consecutive years. Prior to joining Gartner, Ms. Kranich was part of the Technology Advancement Group at Marriott International.

Ms. Kranich received her degree in business administration from American University in Washington, D.C.

Senior Vice President of Global Sales

Mike McCarty joined Gartner in April 2004 and is responsible for Gartner's worldwide sales organization. His focus is on efforts to establish an effective, highly client-centric team-selling model. He is also updating the company's pipeline development and management tools to improve sales productivity, revenue growth, and implementing an opportunity identification and management mechanism.

McCarty will help Gartner refine its vertical sales strategy in several markets including government (federal, state and local) financial services and banking, healthcare, the media industries, and institutional investors that focus on technology markets. He has an exceptional track record in managing high-growth environments, high-performance teams, and strategic selling models. Prior to Gartner, McCarty spent 13 years with IBM. He was also the Executive Vice President of Sales and Customer Service for HBO & Company (now part of McKesson Information Solutions). He served as president and CEO for Carecentric Solutions, Multum Information Services and Just Medicine, Inc.

McCarty has an MBA and a Bachelor of Science in Finance, both from Bowling Green State University.

President, Gartner Consulting

Bob Patton was appointed President, Gartner Consulting and joined in April 2004. Patton's strategy is to develop and position Gartner Consulting as the pre-eminent advisor at the nexus of information technology and business. Gartner Consulting solutions include strategy, IT management, and strategic sourcing.

Before Gartner, Patton was at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young for 13 years in numerous senior management roles. Most recently, he served as CEO, Government Solutions, where he helped secure several mission critical contracts. Previously, he was managing director CGE&Y Americas sector, giving leadership to a business portfolio consisting of $1.1 billion in revenues and 3,500 consulting professionals.

Patton holds a B.B.A. in Accounting with honors from the University of Georgia and is a Certified Public Accountant. He is also a graduate of the executive leadership program at the Kellogg School at Northwestern University.

Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Lewis Schwartz joined Gartner in January 2001 and manages Gartner's legal department, serving as corporate secretary, chief compliance and chief governance officer. Prior to joining Gartner, Schwartz was a partner with Shipman & Goodwin in the Litigation Department and Employment Department, chairing the firm's Employment Litigation Practice Group. Before joining Shipman & Goodwin, Schwartz was a litigation partner in the Stamford office of Schatz & Schatz, Ribicoff & Kotkin, an associate in New York City at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and an assistant district attorney in New York County (Manhattan).

Schwartz is a graduate of Yale University (B.A.) and Cornell Law School (J.D.).

Senior Vice President, Research Content

Peter Sondergaard is senior vice president, Research Content. Sondergaard is responsible for the management and direction of worldwide research.

Sondergaard is a distinguished Gartner analyst and a highly respected research leader with more than 12 years experience in senior positions within Gartner Research.

Prior to this position, Sondergaard was the head of Research for the Technology & Services Sector. His previous roles included Hardware & Systems Sector vice president in Gartner Research and general manager for Gartner Research EMEA, responsible for research integrity, integration and methodology. Sondergaard started at Gartner as a program director for Gartner's personal computing research area, specializing in the overall desktop computing issues of European users.

Prior to joining Gartner, Sondergaard was research director at International Data Corporation in Europe, where he concentrated his efforts on PC analysis and consulting projects for large European users and vendors. Sondergaard also worked for Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), where he was responsible for the integration of PCs between hotels and SAS Data. Sondergaard has been a contributor to and writer for various European trade & business publications.

Sondergaard has a Master's degree in economics from the University of Copenhagen.

Senior Vice President, International Operations

Clive Taylor is responsible for all aspects of Measurement, including Assessments, Decision Tools and Performance Management services throughout the world. Mr. Taylor joined Gartner in January 1995 to head up a new IT Measurement and Benchmarking business. He has taken this business from a standing start to become one of Gartner's fastest-growing services, employing 200 analysts and delivering measurement systems in 12 languages to more than 2,500 clients every year. The business enjoys ISO9000 accreditation and has an enviable reputation for quality and value.

Prior to his work at Gartner, Mr. Taylor spent 16 years in packaged software design and business consulting at a senior level with companies in Europe and the United States, including Nynex, BIS and ICL. During this time, he successfully managed a number of major business process re-engineering assignments in the manufacturing sector. Throughout his consulting career, Mr. Taylor has been directly involved in business analysis, strategy planning, process improvement and most aspects of change management. He has also managed large teams of consultants and analysts as head of operations for Gartner EMEA.

During the early 1990s, Mr. Taylor successfully founded and managed a software company in the United States, which became a top-selling value added reseller for a major hardware manufacturer in North America within two years of entering the market. He is often called upon to assess the international market potential of new services and to design, develop and manage processes and people to deliver rapid growth.

Mr. Taylor has first-hand experience of the business practices in most countries. He is comfortable operating at board level in blue chip companies throughout Europe and in the United States, and has considerable experience in most sectors, including manufacturing, retail, finance, utilities and government. He has a strong knowledge of the management processes in all of these sectors and uses his measurement and management experience in consulting assignments to help organisations improve the contribution and business value of IT. Mr. Taylor is a world authority in the field of Measurement and Performance Management, and has written and presented on the topic at several major events throughout the world.

Mr. Taylor has a bachelor of science honours degree in production engineering from the University of Aston in Birmingham, England. He is a member of several professional business associations, including the Institute of Management.

President, Gartner Executive Programs

Mr. Terry Waters is a senior vice president and general manager in Gartner Community, where he has responsibility for the Gartner worldwide IT and business best practices programs. Best Practices programs bring together peer-level senior IT and business leaders to explore how to solve common business problems, improve corporate performance and provide actionable solutions based on the combined experience of participants. Gartner is the leading worldwide provider of IT advisory, measurement and training services, with more than 3,000 employees in over 80 locations worldwide. Founded in 1979, Gartner is the world's leading provider of information technology (IT) advisory and market research services. Through its four operating units, the company provides a wide array of IT advisory services including market research, consulting services, benchmarking, continuous improvement and best practices services, and technology training to nearly 8,300 client organizations worldwide. Additionally, the company also hosts conferences and events for IT professionals throughout the year.

Mr. Waters has over 20 years of operating experience in the IT industry. Most recently, he was the chief operating officer for ScreamingMedia, an Internet content syndication solutions provider based in New York City. Before that, Mr. Waters spent 14 years with Gartner in a variety of senior sales, marketing and research management leadership roles, including head of Eastern Region sales for the U.S.A. and head of worldwide marketing. In 1994, he started the highly successful Gartner Executive Programs (EXP) businesses, and during the next four years grew those businesses to over 1,000 Global 2000 CIO members around the world. Mr. Waters started his career with Xerox Corporation, where he spent four years in sales and product-marketing support based in New York City.

Mr. Waters has a bachelor's degree in history from the College of the Holy Cross.
