Executive Story Procempa: Skinscan App — Enhancing Healthcare Regulation with Convolutional Neural Networks

This executive story session presents the development and application of the SkinScan App, a solution created by Procempa (the IT and Communication company of Porto Alegre’s City Hall) to transform the triage and regulation process for patients with suspected skin cancer in Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS). Using convolutional neural networks and advanced ensemble techniques, the app helps primary care doctors capture standardized images of lesions, evaluate them via AI, and provide objective support for prioritizing severe cases in the referral queue. By integrating SkinScan into the regulation system, Porto Alegre now has a tool that reduces waiting times, increases diagnostic accuracy, optimizes resource use, and promotes greater equity in access to treatment. The initiative, currently in clinical validation with Santa Casa, stands out for going beyond automated diagnosis, directly managing the patient queue intelligently and serving as a reference for ethical, efficient, and scalable AI application in public healthcare.
