Gartner's Top Analysts Discuss "Business Process Fusion"
17 October 2003

Increasing the responsiveness of IT to business processes has become a hot topic in the corporate world. Most enterprises have already made significant investments in automating key business processes; now they want to move to the next level.

That is where business process fusion, the theme of this year's Symposium/ITxpo 2003 Keynote Address on Monday, comes in.

"Gartner defines business process fusion as the transformation of business activities that is achieved by integrating previously autonomous business processes to create a new scope of management capabilities," said Gartner vice president and Research Fellow Simon Hayward, who will act as moderator for the Keynote discussion.

"This year's Keynote will be more of a talk show format than in previous years," Mr. Hayward said. "We're hoping to show how some high-level issues relate to each other - the same issues that will be drilled down to during Symposium."

Following opening remarks by Gartner chairman and CEO Michael Fleisher, Mr. Hayward will interview some of Gartner's most distinguished analysts.

First, he said, general vice president and Research Fellow Ken McGee will talk about the overall state of the economy and its impact on the IT industry. Mr. McGee will be followed by Research director Mark Raskino and sector general manager Daryl Plummer on the topic of business process fusion.

Vice president and distinguished analyst Donna Scott and Research vice president Thomas Bittman will then discuss real-time infrastructure, and finally principal analyst Rebecca Scholl will talk about business process outsourcing.

"These are topics that cut across Gartner's heartland, as it were," Mr. Hayward said. "What we are really aiming to do here is span the gap between technical issues and business issues in a way that broadens Gartner's reach into more business-oriented topics.

"The challenge for so many enterprises now is how to get the right conversation going between the business and IT parts of the enterprise," he added. "We want to help this conversation take place."
