Harvard Business School Press and Gartner, Inc. Form Publishing Partnership
New line of books will blend technology insights and business growth strategies
BOSTON, MA January 29, 2004 Harvard Business School Press (HBS Press) and Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB) announced today that they will publish a co-branded series of timely professional handbooks for senior executives, tentatively titled The Gartner Growth Agenda: Leading and Managing Strategic Growth with Technology. HBS Press Editorial Director Hollis Heimbouch and Senior Editor Jacqueline Murphy negotiated the partnership agreement. Murphy will oversee the editorial development of the series and its individual titles in conjunction with Gartner Press Publisher Heather Levy and Editor Timothy Ogden. The agent for the deal was Susan Barry of The Barry-Swayne Agency.
Titles in the Gartner Growth Agenda series will cover the key skills, concepts, organizational models and strategic frameworks that will shape business in a world in which IT and business teams increasingly must collaborate to create and execute their organizations' roadmaps for success. Gartner Growth Agenda Books will be based on exclusive research and analysis conducted by Gartner, Inc., the IT research and advisory firm that for 25 years has led its industry in identifying and analyzing technologies and trends that change the competitive dynamics of business. The series will launch in Spring 2005 with two titles: What is IT Worth? by Andy Roswell-Jones and New Era Relationships by Marcus Blosch. Roswell-Jones and Blosch are research directors in Gartner's Executive Programs unit, which advises chief information officers. Additional titles will follow in 2005 and 2006, with topics scheduled to include security, outsourcing, change management, and wireless and mobile business.
As part of the agreement, Harvard Business School Press and Gartner, Inc. also will publish a number of trade books by Gartner analysts on a variety of business and technology topics, some with wide appeal and relevance for the non-technology business manager and others specifically for IT agenda leaders. The first two titles are Heads Up: How to Anticipate Business Surprises and Seize Opportunities First, by Kenneth G. McGee, a Gartner Fellow and specialist in the real-time enterprise, due out in April 2004; and, The New CIO Leader: Setting the Agenda and Delivering Results, by Marianne Broadbent, a Gartner Fellow, and Ellen Kitzis, Group Vice President of Gartner's Executive Programs for CIOs. The second book is due out in late 2004.
The partnership between HBS Press and Gartner, Inc. also includes a component that will allow HBS Press to distribute premier research reports from Gartner Press, the Strategic Planning Series and Executive Reports. These comprehensive guides to today's hot IT topics are designed to help managers make critical decisions. Each publication presents the most important Gartner analysis and in-depth advice on key topics. The reports also feature Gartner's proprietary research tools and models including Magic Quadrants, Hype Cycles and Strategic Planning Assumptions. Topics include CRM, Web Services, Security, Outsourcing, Wireless and Mobile, Business Intelligence and Asset Management.
"We're very excited to have the opportunity to partner with Gartner, Inc.," said David Goehring, Vice President and Director of Harvard Business School Press. "Gartner research leads the information technology world with its vision and pragmatic approach to managing IT operations for strategic business growth." The collaboration will extend beyond editorial development into sales and marketing activities as well, according to Goehring.
"We're delighted to join with Harvard Business School Press, the premier publisher of distinctive business titles," said Dean Daniels, Senior Vice President for Gartner Research. "Our commitment is for The Gartner Growth Agenda to become an indispensable reference for the growing ranks of business and IT managers worldwide who apply technology in the formulation and execution of business strategy. The Agenda series is designed to help them better understand and deliver on the strategic potential of IT for accelerating business growth."
The agreement with Gartner, Inc. is one of several publishing partnerships HBS Press has concluded in the past 12 months as it seeks to work closely with leading organizations in developing new content for focused areas of research and practice, and broaden its global impact. Last November, HBS Press announced its agreement with the Society for Human Resource Management to develop a co-branded line of books focusing on human resource topics.
