| GartnerGroup to Conduct a Definitive Study of the Costs and Benefits of Application Integration
| 250 Enterprises With Application Integration Project Experience Will Be Surveyed
Stamford, Conn., May 12, 1999 -- Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT), announced today that it is planning an in-depth multiclient study to examine the market for application integration. The study aims to resolve some of the challenges vendors and service providers encounter following the rise of the zero-latency enterprise - in which information moves through the enterprise in as little time as possible.
The zero-latency trend has vaulted application integration into the forefront of IT decision-making in enterprises. Inside the enterprise, in the supply chain, and in customer-facing functions, enterprises are integrating applications to streamline processes, reduce costs, improve service, and respond more quickly to market opportunities. However, application integration also has the potential to cause significant increases in costs. Technology vendors are thus seeking ways to maximize the efficiency of the application integration programs undertaken by their customers.
The GartnerGroup study will detail the costs and benefits, skills requirements, and effectiveness of varying approaches to application integration, including message-broker and non-message-broker approaches. The study will also examine how different products and services can affect the time-to-benefit of an integration project. The research will be based on in-depth surveys of 250 U.S. enterprises that have undertaken application integration projects.
Sponsorship opportunities for this project are limited. The research is scheduled to begin in June 1999 and results are scheduled for release by October 1999. Study findings will be made available only to the sponsors. For more information on participating in the study, contact Tom O'Flaherty at +1-203-316-3529 or

Benefits of participation
The in-depth insights that this study will provide about the experiences of enterprises that have integrated applications will enable vendors and service providers to more effectively target and sell their application integration solutions. The study results will enable sponsors to:
- Help customers identify the best orientations for their application integration projects by drawing on the experiences of several hundred corporate implementations
- Target the application and technology environments "most likely to succeed"
- Target their solutions most efficiently - in situations where the solution is most likely to be perceived by customers as being strongest and most appropriate
- Take steps to improve customer satisfaction and retention - both in absolute terms and relative to competitors
