GartnerGroup to Capitalize on IT Spending Fueled by E-Business
STAMFORD, Conn., July 29, 1999…Global information technology (IT) spending will increase to $3.3 trillion worldwide by 2002 driven by E-business initiatives, according to GartnerGroup, Inc. (NYSE: IT) President and CEO William T. Clifford, who addressed more than 100 financial analysts at GartnerGroup’s Stamford, Conn. headquarters.
"As Y2K efforts wind down, E-business will be the prime focus of IT spending as enterprises seek to thoroughly re-engineer their business processes," said Clifford. "A key challenge will be to integrate technology into the core of the business, rather than use technology to create ancillary or parallel businesses. Enterprises that fail to do this will waste valuable time and may not survive. As never before, success depends on making E-business the intersection of business and technology, which requires a fundamental transformation of existing business models."
To underscore this transformation, GartnerGroup predicts that by 2003, 60 percent of IT spending and decision-making will originate within business units — that is, outside the traditional corporate IS organization. Clifford went on to say, "This is an important and fundamental shift in the industry, and GartnerGroup is positioning itself to capitalize on the trend. Our success depends on our ability to reinvent ourselves in lock step with this evolving market.
"GartnerGroup has a strong community of analysts who are expert in the fundamental E-commerce and Internet technology competencies. GartnerGroup is uniquely qualified to satisfy the full-service E-commerce needs of user and vendor enterprises alike. Success in this marketplace requires intimate client knowledge, vertical industry savvy, and the ability and the resources to assist this new buying center throughout the life cycle — from market research to business application to implementation and measurement. It will require the breadth of operations and the scale of GartnerGroup."
