GartnerGroup Sponsors Techies Day - October 5, 1999
Techies Day was founded by techies.com and CNET. Premier sponsors include Compaq, Federal Express, GartnerGroup and Information Week. Media sponsors are Red Herring, Forbes, Inc., and Targeted Media Worldwide. Contributing sponsors include Tech Corps, Girl Geeks, Net Podium, Greeting-Cards.com, Blue Mountain Arts and Association of Competitive Technology.
GartnerGroup research indicates that 20 percent of IT positions will go unfilled in the United States during the next three to five years as industries vie for technology talent.
National Techies Day was created to emphasize the crucial role technology professionals play in our increasingly wired world. The lack of trained technology workers continues to be a major issue in the American workforce. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for technology professionals is expected to double to 3 million by 2003; however, graduates with technical degrees are not keeping pace with demand. National Techies Day organizers believe it is vital to stimulate more student interest in considering technology careers.
Techies Day also seeks to encourage math and science learning among students through the Techies Day in Schools program, which showcases technology career opportunities. Techies Day has been supported by Vice President Al Gore, who noted, "I want to commend all of the information technology professionals who are encouraging technology and science learning in schools."
"GartnerGroup has been helping clients worldwide in finding and retaining top technology talent," said William T. Clifford, President and CEO of GartnerGroup. "The IT labor shortage must be addressed at the high school and college levels."
"We have high hopes that Techies Day will demonstrate the dearth of high-tech employment opportunities and encourage youngsters to pursue this as a career choice," said Doug Berg, President of techies.com, one of the founders of Techies Day.
