Gartner's Dataquest Says Latin America Server Shipments Grew 17 Percent in Second Quarter 2000
San Jose, Calif., September 11, 2000 - Economic recovery in Brazil, continued growth in Mexico and increasing adoption of technology by Latin American businesses have driven expansion in the server market. Latin American server shipments in the second quarter of 2000 surpassed 41,000 units, an increase of 17 percent over the same period last year, according Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB).

Compaq and IBM held onto the No. 1 and No. 2 positions (see Table 1), although the companies had shipments decline 24 percent and 26 percent, respectively.

"White box entry-level servers are on the rise in Latin America, at the expense of these two international vendors," said Luis Anavitarte, director for Dataquest's Latin America research. "Compaq and IBM were also faced with increased competition in the entry-level segment by other vendors like Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Acer and Alaska."

"In the mid and high-end servers, Compaq, IBM, and Sun Microsystems are benefiting with the growing presence and technological requirements from Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs)," said Lillian Alvarado, industry analyst for Dataquest's Server Quarterly Statistics Latin America program. "The ISPs and ASPs are contributing to a shift in product composition toward servers with higher average revenue."
