In this keynote, Professor Ishiguro will introduce the avatar technologies he has developed to date, with a particular focus on his initiatives under the Moonshot Research and Development Program and the implementation of these technologies in society.Avatars will enable everyone—including older adults and people with disabilities—to participate freely in a wide range of activities with capabilities that surpass those of ordinary human beings, while extending their physical, cognitive, and perceptual abilities. Avatars will also make it possible for people to work and learn anytime and anywhere, minimize commuting, and enjoy a greater amount of free time. These avatars will not only help address labor shortages; they will also create diverse opportunities for people to connect with one another—an experience that lies at the heart of what it means to be human. In this way, avatars will become an indispensable technology for the future of Japanese society. At Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, Professor Ishiguro served as a Theme Project Producer and created the pavilion The Future of Life, which envisioned society 50 years into the future. A wide range of robotic and computer-generated character avatars were used in the operation of the pavilion. This presentation will also showcase how avatars were used at The Future of Life pavilion.
