Chief Information and Digital Officer
Charles McHardie is the Chief Information and Digital Officer for Services Australia. In this position, he leads the largest Government Technology Group within Australia, and is responsible for driving digital and technology transformation within Services Australia as well as several whole-of-government programmes. By bringing business and ICT together, Charles has a pivotal role in the delivery of the agency’s vision of making government services simple so people can get on with their lives.

Charles has also previously held the position of Deputy CEO, Transformation Projects Group for Services Australia. In this role, he was responsible for major projects across Services Australia, with core responsibility for significant investment in transformation programmes for Welfare, Health, Aged Care, Veterans and myGov service offers to millions of Australians. Prior to this role he was the Deputy Secretary, Transformation and Enabling Services for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, responsible for the digital enabled and business led transformation of services delivered to Veterans’ and their families under Veteran Centric Reform.

Prior to this, he serviced in both Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology Officer roles in Services Australia’s predecessor, the Department of Human Services.

Before joining the Australian Public Service, Charles enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the Royal Australian Navy, retiring in April 2015 after 30 years of service alternating between ICT, Intelligence positions and operational postings. Charles was deployed three times to the Middle East in Australia’s contribution to Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom as well as operations in East Timor. Charles was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2011 for services to Naval Warfare and awarded a commendation for distinguished service in 2014 for his Command of Combined Task Force 150, responsible for Coalition Maritime Counter Terrorism Operations based in Bahrain. He holds a Master of Science (Information Technology) from the University of New South Wales, a Master of Systems Engineering from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Arts (Strategic Studies) from Deakin University.
