"The expansion of proven Internet Protocol (IP) virtual private network (VPN) implementations are expected to drive the worldwide IP VPN equipment market to $4.7 billion by 2006, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner, Inc. The market is projected to reach just under $3 billion in 2002, a 45.7 percent increase from 2001 revenue of $2.05 billion."

"'The market for managed IP VPN solutions from carriers has enormous potential and will become increasingly important,' said Caroline Jones, an analyst for Gartner Dataquest's worldwide telecommunications and networking group. 'Small-to-midsize businesses desire to benefit from the convenience and cost-effectiveness of IP VPNs without the setup, support and management problems. Most businesses in this sector do not have sufficient in-house expertise to support and manage a geographically dispersed VPN on a "24x7" basis,' Jones said."

"According to Gartner, Inc., a typical large business owns between 200 and 500 domain names and spends close to $100,000 per year registering, maintaining and defending them. Seven additional domains will be put into use within the next 12 months, with the .biz and.info domains scheduled to go live in early October.

"Through 2006 and beyond, it will be 1,000 to 100,000 times more costly to recover a domain name from hostile ground than simple and proactive domain name management and registration.

"Critical names are domains that are essential to the brand identity and awareness of the company or a specific product line. Companies will devote 65 percent of their money, time and effort in registering, maintaining and defending these names."
