STAMFORD, Conn., February 21, 2006 - Worldwide server shipments in 2005 increased 12.7 percent from 2004, while worldwide server revenue grew 4.5 percent in 2005, according to Gartner, Inc.

"The most dynamic market remains the x86 server segment," said Jeffrey Hewitt, research director at Gartner. "These servers continue to be the choice in increasing numbers to meet the needs of more Web users accessing more file types from more access points than ever."

"RISC-Itanium Unix servers fell 5.3 percent in shipments for the year and remained relatively flat with a .5 percent increase in revenue. The replacement at the low end of this market with Linux servers and declines at the high end of the market are the reasons for these results," Mr. Hewitt said. "Mainframes fell in revenue for 2005 (9.5 percent year over year), as all vendor revenue declined for the year including the mainframe leader, IBM, which declined 7.6 percent."

IBM continued to lead the worldwide server market based on revenue (see Table 1), however the company ended the year with a revenue increase that slightly underperformed the market. Gartner analysts attribute the company's performance to single-digit growth in iSeries and xSeries servers, while pSeries grew 15.1 percent, and zSeries declined 7 percent.

In server shipments, Hewlett-Packard remained the worldwide leader for 2005 (see Table 2), however, its shipment growth was lower than the industry shipment increase of 12.7 percent. The ProLiant and HP Integrity lines both grew in the double-digits, but all other HP brands fell, resulting in the vendor's yearly 2005 growth to a single-digit figure.

In Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), server shipments surpassed 2.3 million units in 2005, a 14.4 percent increase from 2004. Server revenue totalled $16.6 billion in 2005, a 5.4 percent increase from 2004.

"2005 was another positive year for the server market. Healthy levels of demand remained in the market even though the impact of the replacement cycle & positive exchange rates were less favourable than last year," said Adrian O'Connell, principal research analyst at Gartner. x86 servers remained the strongest segment of the market and it compensated for relative weakness in spending in other areas. Whilst RISC-Itanium Unix servers achieved growth, this segment continues to suffer from ongoing migration to Linux at the low-end of the market as well as slower demand for high end systems. At the high-end of the market, the market also suffered due to weaker mainframe sales in 2005.

Hewlett-Packard gained the lead in 2005 based on server revenue, relegating IBM to the second place. Hewlett-Packard's increase was largely driven by its x86 business. Although IBM performed well with its Series line in particular, its overall results were constrained by weaker performances with its xSeries & iSeries and zSeries.
