Leader and statesman, Michael Chertoff came to the job of 2nd Secretary of Homeland Security with a background heavy with experience in fighting terrorism, having served as the head of the Justice Department's criminal division in the months after Sept. 11th. He implemented programs and capabilities that did not exist prior to September 11, to better equip the U.S. to deal with the threats of the 21st century across land, sea, and air. In March 2009, Secretary Chertoff formed an advisory firm, The Chertoff Group, which counsels corporate and government clients on security and risk management.

Wilson's historic career in international relations spans more than three decades, with service under five U.S. presidents — Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton. Widely recognized for his diplomatic leadership, Wilson was hailed "a true American hero" by President George H.W. Bush for his efforts to free more than 100 American hostages in Iraq. The last American official to confront Saddam Hussein before the start of the Gulf War, Wilson served as the acting U.S. Ambassador in Iraq throughout Operation Desert Shield.

Colonel Johnson served 23 years of active duty with the Air Force in a variety of space program related assignments, from the operational space surveillance unit level to service at the Pentagon on the space systems acquisition staff of the Under Secretary of the Air Force. He is an acknowledged Defense Department expert on space control, and in particular space surveillance systems and operations. He led several studies for the Air Force and Office of the Secretary of Defense on capabilities and future requirements for space control systems.

On behalf of the Director, NSA, the IAD is the focal point for Cyber Security, Cryptography, and information systems security for all national security systems. Specific responsibilities include research and development activities to generate IA techniques and solutions, ensuring the availability of IA products and solutions and understanding the threat to and vulnerability of national security systems.
