Tom Austin is a Gartner Fellow (since 1997) and VP. Mr. Austin drives Gartner's disruptive research incubator (the Maverick Program) and leads the AI (Artificial Intelligence, Amazing Innovation) core technology research community. This includes machine learning, deep neural networks (deep learning), natural-language processing, conversational systems and cognitive computing. We are entering a multidecade age of the use of Amazing Innovation (AI) technologies that will revolutionize life, work, and how enterprises and industries operate.

Previous Experience

From 2000 through 2004, Mr. Austin was responsible for Gartner's overall research agenda and processes. Subsequently, he became Chief of Research for social software, collaboration, communications, information management, business intelligence and high-performance workplace (HPW) research. More recently, he was Gartner's Lead Analyst for Adobe and Google. Earlier, in the 1990s, he was responsible for much of Gartner's early work on network computing and its immediate predecessor, client/server architectures. He was also Gartner's resident expert on groupware and related technologies, and the struggle between Netscape, Microsoft, IBM and others for next-generation messaging and interpersonal applications. Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Austin was with Digital Equipment, where he focused on strategic planning, line-of-business management, marketing and software engineering. He has more than 40 years of experience in the IT industry.
