Charles Smulders is the Practice Vice President of Gartner's Software Engineering Group. In this capacity, Mr. Smulders leads teams responsible for Gartner's IT Leaders' focused research on Software Engineering Strategy and Technologies, as well as broader Application Strategy and Governance. He is based in Santa Clara, California.
Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Smulders was Managing Vice President of Gartner's Mobile and Endpoint team where he oversaw Gartner's IT Leaders focused research on mobile, PCs, desktop virtualization, Windows and OS. From 2014 to 2016, he was a Research VP covering the Enterprise File Sync and Share market.
In 2014, Mr. Smulders completed a three-year assignment running Gartner's Research Content Process group. During this time, he was responsible for designing and delivering internal Research-related applications, including Gartner's Research Planning Tool and the Next-Generation Magic Quadrant. In addition, he had responsibility for developing Gartner's methodologies, Research Agenda management and content, and writing, graphics and editing approaches.
In his previous positions with Gartner, he led the End-User Client Computing and Storage teams and the technology-and-service-provider-focused Computing Hardware team. He was also Gartner's Lead Analyst for Apple and Dell, the lead for distribution channel research and a Gartner forecast head.
He relocated to the U.S. in 1997, having worked at Dataquest's (acquired by Gartner) EMEA headquarters in the U.K., where he was responsible for European PC research. Prior to that, he worked as an analyst for Romtec, a U.K.-based IT market research company and at a major specialist chain in the retail sector.
