Sr Director Analyst

Christian Stephan is a Senior Director Analyst in Gartner's CIO Research, where he is part of the Innovation and Disruption analyst team. His work focuses on helping executives harness the potential of technologies, trends and ideas to drive their own innovation, transform their business and create revolutionary momentum.

Previous experience

Prior to joining Gartner, he spent eight years as the head of innovation research for a global retail company, where he was responsible for innovation strategies and implementations in the areas of customer experience, business operations improvement and building new business models. Together with his award-winning team N3XT, he realised 30 to 50 projects per year, changing culture and business model of the corporation.

During this time, he was appointed vice-chairman of the supervisory board of an academic institute dedicated to applied science research in AI and machine learning. He was also a member of the supervisory board and mentor of a centre for digital entrepreneurship.

Previously, he was responsible for developing and implementing the group's strategies for unstructured, structured and user-generated content, driving new business models in owned, earned and paid media across traditional, new and social media.

He qualified for this during his previous job at one of the largest German publishing houses in the special interest title sector. There he developed technology brands and magazines, managed the flagship brand as editor-in-chief including digital products and two test labs for hardware and software and was part of the strategy committee.
