Ranjit Atwal

Sr Director Analyst

Ranjit Atwal serves as Research Director within Gartner’s Emerging Dynamics team, where he leads analysis on how on-device AI is fundamentally reshaping the requirements and economics of next-generation devices—including AI PCs, smartphones, wearables, and new device types like Pocket Servers and Infrastructure PCs. Ranjit’s research centers on the rise of agentic AI, the evolution of tokenomics, and the transition from traditional, isolated digital devices to persistent, always-on endpoints capable of orchestrating complex AI workloads and enabling continuous intelligence at the edge.

He has pioneered frameworks to understand Cloud-to-Device AI strategies, memory-first design, and the business impact of shifting AI costs from unpredictable cloud OpEx to managed device CapEx through local execution and FinOps. Among his flagship research are “Memory-First Design Will Determine Winners in the Emerging Agentic AI PC Market,” and “AI Token Capture: Infrastructure PCs(AI PCs) Enable $40B Cloud FinOps Shift.”

Ranjit’s insights are widely recognized, with his commentary featured in outlets such as The Economist and BBC, and his guidance helping industry leaders reimagine device, pricing, and platform models for the new era of distributed agentic AI.
