This Consult the Board survey summary features perspectives from 10 Technology Infrastructure Research Board members regarding the ways to control inbound traffic and load balancing across their multiple ISPs. It describes members’ load balancing methodologies, key challenges in managing ISP load distribution, and technologies that are pivotal for balancing outgoing traffic.

At half of the respondents’ organizations (5 of 10), the IT unit has a centralized structure with control fully concentrated in central IT.
The majority of respondents (7 of 10) manage more than 10 ISP connections in their organization.
All 10 respondents use border gateway protocol (BGP) peering for load balancing, followed by software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) and multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) with traffic engineering (6 respondents each).
