This Consult the Board survey summary features inputs from 18 Information Risk Management Research Board members regarding the identity verification process(es) they deploy for password reset requests. The summary outlines the use of authentication methods when validating a password reset request, steps to reset the password, and training for IT help desk associates to verify user identity.

Slightly more than half of the respondents (10 of 18, or 56%) follow authentication practices other than simply answering previously identified verification questions for a password reset request.
Half of the respondents (9 of 18, or 50%) note that IT help desk associates can independently perform inbound password reset in all scenarios.
A plurality of respondents (8 of 18, or 44%) use password reset questions as the authentication method to validate a password reset request for both employees and non-employees.
