This Consult the Board survey summary features inputs from 11 Information Risk Management Research Board members regarding their approaches to managing technology obsolescence in their organization. It outlines members’ policies that define system obsolescence, their methods for collecting data for the overall and obsolete systems, and their establishment of an acceptable level of obsolescence.

About half of the respondents (5 of 11) have an obsolescence policy that applies enterprise-wide to all systems, without exception.
At most respondents’ organizations (7 of 11), the system or platform owner is responsible for maintaining the currency of systems and addressing obsolescence.
The majority of respondents (7 of 10) have mostly automated the approaches for collecting and calculating data on the number of overall and obsolete systems.
Two-thirds of the respondents (6 of 9) have not yet established acceptable levels of system obsolescence in their organization.
