This Consult the Board survey summary features inputs from 23 Gartner Research Board for Global CIOs, Gartner Research Board for Regional CIOs, Data and Analytics Research Board, and Technology Infrastructure Research Board members regarding their digital manufacturing initiatives. It outlines members’ primary drivers and challenges faced while implementing such initiatives, the use and scope of manufacturing execution systems (MES), and the application of advanced technologies at their manufacturing sites.

More than half of the respondents (13 of 23, or 57%) operate one or more manufacturing sites.
The top two primary drivers for pursuing digital manufacturing initiatives are integration of operational technology (OT) (13 respondents) as well as increased security and compliance (11 respondents).
Quality management is the most common capability that MES supports (13 respondents), followed by process management, in-line printing and labeling, and performance management (11 respondents each).
