This Consult the Board survey summary features inputs from 18 Gartner Research Board for Global CIOs members regarding their approach toward SAM. It discusses members’ SAM objectives for 2024, their approaches to track software purchases, and other aspects of software license management.

Almost all respondents have included cost reduction (17 of 18, or 94%) and license optimization (16 respondents, or 89%) in their SAM objectives for 2024.
More than half of the respondents (11 of 18, or 61%) have a centralized mechanism to track most software purchases, but exclude some purchases.
Slightly less than half of the respondents (8 of 18, or 44%) follow a centralized approach for day-to-day software license management, where the process is owned and executed centrally, with central governance and enterprise-standard tools
