Summary
While business conditions are very volatile and uncertain, many internal IT costs are very certain, creating a mismatch between costs and revenue. This means there is a desire to make IT costs more variable. Although some sourcing and technology options purport to provide a more variable model, often the details mean that it is hard to achieve true variable costing that is both responsive and at a reasonable unit cost. What levers can CIOs pull to make costs more variable, and what design and implementation practices make costs variable to match business needs? This research is aimed at resolving this issue.
