Summary
This summary contains input from nine members on their approaches to managing IT obsolescence of IT assets (i.e., business software, operating systems, programming languages, databases, hardware, and middleware). We begin this summary with an overview of the IT assets members include in their central obsolescence approaches. We then explore the approaches members have adopted to anticipate and manage obsolescence of these assets, including those that are deemed end-of-life by vendors and are therefore no longer supported. Next, we describe the techniques members use to prioritize remediation work and budget for such remediation. We close by highlighting some of the key benefits and challenges members have encountered while implementing their approaches to identifying and anticipating IT obsolescence, and we include resolution techniques members have used to mitigate some of these challenges.
