Summary
Digital threads enable the traceability and digital continuity of a product’s life cycle and yet are perceived as challenging to implement. Manufacturing CIOs can use PLM software to create, connect and govern product data across the value chain and lay the foundation for a digital thread.

Overview
Key Findings
Digital threads are becoming increasingly important for manufacturers to generate consistent data that is authored, consumed and traced across the product life cycle phases of designing, building, testing, operating and sustaining.
A digital thread has a strong value proposition, such as traceability of product information and digital quality guidelines, and those who fail to implement it early in the product life cycle do not achieve the best results.
Although product life cycle management (PLM) starts with engineering and provides a logical start to a digital thread, manufacturers often ignore or overlook the role of PLM in a digital thread.
