Gartner survey data shows that projects in the R&D technology portfolios are nearly equally split between four development stages. Twenty-three percent of projects are in the idea phase, 24% are in the applied research phase, 27% are in the pilot production/demonstration phase, and 26% are in the transfer to business or to product development.
Almost half (47%) of R&D technology projects are terminated in the idea phase, while only 17%are killed in the transfer to business or to product development phase.
