Microsoft has announced significant changes to the Microsoft 365 Education storage quota, effective from 1 August 2024. For some, this amounts to a 90% storage reduction. Education CIOs responsible for Microsoft 365 must plan to rationalize and reduce their Microsoft 365 storage consumption.
Microsoft’s change to the education storage model ends what has effectively been unlimited Microsoft 365 storage for education organizations. The change will have a significant impact and will result in many rethinking their short- and long-term storage strategies.
While Microsoft asserts that most education organizations are well below their storage allotment, Gartner has spoken to many higher education institutions that will be significantly impacted by these changes. Some will be hundreds of terabytes over when the quota is enforced.
