Summary
While finance leaders remain hyperfocused on evaluating which AI model offers the most intelligence, a much more expensive threat is materializing: vendor lock-in. Unlike the legacy SaaS era, where monolithic platforms made lock-in unavoidable, the modular nature of AI introduces new degrees of freedom. The primary factor to unlock this freedom is the architectural foundations organizations establish today. CFOs must champion decoupled agent architectures. For example, the reasoning model can be leased, but memory, integrations, and skills should remain enterprise-owned assets. This is relatively inexpensive to implement on initial deployment, but once the three layers are owned by the vendor, separating them can take significant effort.
