Gartner recently interviewed supply chain leaders from multiple hospital systems, including University of Washington (UW) Medicine, MultiCare Health and Virginia Mason Health. These interviews revealed several lessons that can serve as a beacon for the rest of the country in responding to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Some themes emerging from Washington state were anticipated, such as shortages of PPE and testing supplies. Others were less expected, like the need for additional capacity ICU beds and ventilators to keep up with the exponentially growing volume of patients.
Supply chain leaders in healthcare can use these insights to learn how to be proactive and responsive in this new environment of extreme shortages and capacity limitations.
