High Performance in a Geographically Diverse Workforce

Presented by Daniel Sanchez Reina, VP Analyst, Gartner

High performance requires acknowledging cultural differences across geographies and mastering their management as key ingredients so that all employees feel treated and respected fairly. In his session, Daniel Sanchez Reina, VP Analyst at Gartner, explained how CIOs can enable a high-performing, geographically diverse workforce.

Key Takeaways

  • “The combination of talent scarcity and time existing resources would need to upskill is a major obstacle to digital acceleration.”
  • “This obstacle can be overcome by recruiting contingent workers, which includes contractors, free workers and gig workers who are borderless by nature. Currently 35% of organizations are recruiting gig workers.”

  • “Unless managed well, national cultural differences can be a conflict rather than a synergy.”

  • “There are three main clashes in cross-cultural interactions: 1) Decision Making, 2) Conflict Resolution 3) Performance Feedback.”

  • Decision Making: “In countries that have a collective national culture, for example India, do not criticize or contradict a colleague publicly.”

  • Conflict Resolution: “It is important to preserve harmony and look for a mediator to resolve conflicts.”

  • Performance Feedback: “Individualistic countries are more open to critical feedback, if it is accompanied by a learning for everyone.”

Oil and Gas: Top Technology Trends

Presented by Rich McAvey, VP Analyst, Gartner

In response to the energy transition and other disruptors, oil and gas companies are adopting a broader spectrum of business strategies and evolving operating models. In this session, Rich McAvey, VP Analyst at Gartner highlighted five technology trends that are shaping the oil and gas industry and helping CIOs keep IT capabilities in sync with evolving business operating models.

Key Takeaways

  • “A do nothing response to the current disruption is not an option for oil and gas CIOs.”

  • “Oil and gas CIOs can rely on north star objectives to cut through the chaos, and guide diverse teams towards one goal. The path to north star objectives is shaped by technology trends.”

  • “There are five key technology trends that are shaping the oil and gas industry: Intelligent Operations,Composable Applications, Autonomous Systems, Cloud-Edge Architecture and Enterprise Data Fabric.”

  • 1) Intelligent Operations: “It is a strategy where physical systems are represented, configured and controlled by intelligent software. Think of oil wells, pipelines and drills that can collaboratively operate without any human intervention.”

  • 2) Composable Applications: “Enabling fusion teams to innovate quickly requires composable applications. This includes rapidly assembled low-code or no-code applications.”

  • 3)Autonomous Systems: “These are categorized by three key characteristics:independently operate itself; learn and modify; and use learnings of internal state to guide future decisions. These systems can help solve new-age issues such as finding new oil wells using data and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the future.”

  • 4) Cloud-Edge Architecture: “It refers to a common general purpose computing infrastructure that is present in all locations. Using cloud-edge architecture, engineers and analysts can source data from remote locations and craft effective decisions.”

  • 5) Data Fabric: “This uses technology to improve data management, data security and data visibility from anywhere, and finally offers practical pathways to complex data problems.”
