Summary
IBM’s earnings miss should not be interpreted as a broad deterioration in enterprise IT demand. Instead, it provides one of the clearest signals yet that the multiyear reallocation of enterprise technology budgets toward AI infrastructure is approaching its practical limits. Over the past two years, CIOs have aggressively redirected spending away from legacy software, mainframe modernization, and discretionary IT initiatives to fund AI infrastructure, GPUs, networking, storage, and memory. IBM appears to be one of the first major casualties of that shift as customers have delayed transaction processing software purchases in favor of servers, storage, and memory.
