Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a digital currency that is the most prominent of the family of cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies are a subset of digital currency that is decentralized, and based on a set of algorithms and protocols that enable a peer-to-peer, cryptographically based payment mechanism, medium of exchange and store of value. The bitcoin technology stack came into existence in January 2009, defined by an individual or group of individuals using the name Satoshi Nakamoto.
