Until now, the dental care space has been mostly unbeknownst to new technological advancements in artificial intelligence. Now, Colgate and Oral-B have decided to explore new dimensions in the industry by embedding AI into a toothbrush. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 in Las Vegas, both Colgate and Oral-B introduced their respective smart toothbrush.
Oral-B’s toothbrush utilizes AI algorithms along with the data collected from its sensors to provide solutions for better oral health based on the digital map of the mouth, highlighting the parts which require cleaning. For this, users will have to download the Oral-B iO app on their smartphones and connect it with the toothbrush. The sensors embedded in the toothbrush contain a new ‘magnetic drive’ which is responsible for the micro-vibrations of the bristles.
Colgate introduced the new Plaqless Pro smart electric toothbrush which has microsensors embedded to detect the plaque build-up in mouth, even before you start brushing. The smart toothbrush has to be connected with the Colgate Connect app via Bluetooth in order to use it. The app then interprets the data fed to it by the toothbrush and provides detailed information in real-time specific to the user’s mouth. It also analyzes brushing patterns and techniques to maintain better dental health.
Chief Dental Officer at Colgate, Dr. Maria Ryan said “In the dentist’s office, we’re beginning to see a shift toward precision oral care that tailors treatment to each patient’s specific needs. The Colgate Plaqless Pro smart electric toothbrush is inspired by that shift, and improves brushing efficacy by accounting for an individual’s brushing technique and the biofilm buildup in their mouth. And by immediately alerting the user when an area is clean, Plaqless Pro coaches them to brush better, helping both the patient and the oral care provider to build an even stronger partnership in achieving optimal oral health.”
