Insubordination

Insubordination refers to an employee’s intentional refusal to obey an employer’s lawful and reasonable orders. An act of insubordination often results in disciplinary action for the employee, up to and including termination. Insubordination occurs when three conditions are met:

  1. The employer gives a direct order.
  2. The employee acknowledges and understands the order.
  3. The employee refuses to carry out the order (either explicitly or through nonperformance).
